Studio Fun on Hurricane Day

If you live on the east coast, you know that Hurricane Irene will hit Maryland later tonite. So how did I spend today? While most people were out buying emergency supplies, boarding up windows, or hunkering down, I spent this morning and afternoon at the recording studio with a session drummer, recording tracks for my upcomming Xmas album due this year.

Yeah, I had booked this studio session a few weeks in advance, and the drummer and I were so excited to record, that were not gonna let some stupid hurricane get in our way!
What better way to get yourself in the holiday spirit and pumped to record Xmas songs, than in the hours right before a hurricane, when the rain is hitting the windows hard, the wind is blowing hard and you can hear the trees shake. Suprisingly, we positioned the mics so well that you can't hear any of the outdoors chaos in the recordings, and the drum tracks sound great. I guess a storm brewing outside really encourages you to play well :)

Of course, on the way to and from the studio, there was hardly any traffic on the highways as almost nobody was on the highways. Awesome. If you're a DC/Baltimore resident, you know that traffic around these metro areas are hellish. Unfortuantly, I saw someone got pulled over by the cops for I presume speeding. Gosh, can't the cops give this guy a break? He's probally just trying to do his emergency shopping and make it home before the hurricane.

You're probally wondering if I've done my emergency shopping yet? Nope, if the power goes out and I'm stuck in my home, all I need is my guitar. Just kidding, I already stocked up the previous night on water and canned foods.

Oh yeah, my gig tonite at Caribou Coffee is cancelled, due to, you guessed it right, the hurricane.

Eric Tessmer Band this weekend!!! (Aug 6th & 7th)

Do you live in Northern Virginia, and need a good dose of some of the best blues-rock ever this weekend?
Eric Tessmer is playing in Leesburg VA this weekend, both on sat and sun evening! He's an awesome blues guitarist touring up here from Austin, who shreds a lot like Stevie Ray Vaughan, he's the real deal, and one of the most badass guitarists I've ever seen live. Should definitely check him out if you like blues or SRV's music. I personally won't be able to make it, as I will be out of town this weekend, but YOU should be there. Here's examples of his playing

What is Gangsta Folk Music?

About a month ago on June 25th 2011, I did an acoustic show with fellow acoustic musicians Josh Urban (http://joshurban.blogspot.com/) and Harris Face. I arrived at the venue, Cafe Bella located across from the 930 club, about 45min early to soundcheck and set-up my merch table. Upon arriving and meeting up with my friend Devin and his girlfriend Lauren, they both had a distraught look on their faces. I asked them what was up?

Devin told me he arrived at the venue 30min before I arrived. When he was walking to the venue, the streets were packed, as their was some sort of festival going on. As he settled in the venue and ordered some drinks, he heard "pop pop pop" noises. He thought maybe someone was firing off fireworks early as July 4th was around the corner. About 5 min later, he heard abulance sirens rushing over.

Curious, he peeked outside, and saw 5 people laying on the ground, blood gushing about, and everyone around was freaking out. Thankfully, the ambulance was there to take those victims to a nearby hospital. By the time I arrived at the venue, the streets were already cleared, the ambulances gone, the blood cleaned up, and I was totally oblivious as to what just happened outside the venue.

Later, I found out on the evening news, that there was a shootout between 2 gang members, and 5 people in the street just happened to be caught in the crossfire. This happened just right outside, literally an hour before my acoustic show was about to start. No wonder there wasn't a big turnout to that show that night. Due to these events, maybe I should start labeling my music as "Gangsta Folk" instead of "Fingerstyle Guitarist"?
